Builyan State School is situated some 95km SW of Gladstone. It is a small community with its major focus being on the timber industry and farming.
Despite its relative closeness to a large centre, it is fairly isolated and this isolation is emphasized by the lack of television reception and mobile phone coverage. Because of this isolation, one of the priorities of the school is to maintain its role as the hub of the community with the use of its facilities, and assistance with the education of the students and the development of technology, to create opportunities for students to communicate with students their own age in similar small schools and in larger settings.
School Camp 2011
Back into action again this week after a fantastic school camp. The students were very well behaved and we had a very enjoyable time. The highlight of the camp as Principal was going to Sizzler’s and having not one, not two, but about 4 comments from the people of the public commenting on how well behaved and polite and well-mannered the students were. Instead of me explaining about the camp I have got some of our students to do it.
Snakesdown Under
As soon as we arrived at Snakes Down Under we jumped straight into the snake show were we got to see the dangerous Red Bellied Black Snake, which doesn’t always have a red belly. We also got to see the Olive Python witch can grow up to 3.5m long. Then we got our picture taken holding the olive python and a saltwater crocodile. After that we got to see the crocodiles and alligators that were on show. We then moved onto the lizards and turtles were we saw the Pig-nosed Turtle, the Jackie Dragon and the Water Monitor. After that we moved into the snake house which was filled with snakes such as the Albino Python, Mulga Snake, Fierce Snake and the Reticulated Python and after that awesome enclosure we had lunch and headed for Underwater World.

Underwater World
On school camp Builyan State School went to Underwater World where everyone had a blast. We got to see some of the exhibits being Backyard Billabong, Weird and Freaky, and Fresh and Freaky. During the tour we saw some animals like frogs, alligators, Japanese crab spider and other animals. We also got to sleep in the tunnel with the sharks, fish and other swimming creatures, but before bed we got to feed the animals from above the observer tunnels.
We went to the Touch and Feel exhibit were we got the chance to touch starfish and sea cucumber. We also got see a private seal show with Groucho. Groucho showed us a few tricks whilst the trainer would tell us some interesting seal facts. It’s not over yet we also got to see the otters then it was off to bed. In the morning whilst we were saying thank-you we spotted two divers diving in to help Mystery the grey nurse shark, who was extremely exhausted from being bitten by the other two sharks who were showing that they were interested. In the end us students had the experience that we would never forget.

Bellingham Maze
We just arrived from Underwater World to Bellingham Maze. We then split into two groups. One group went for the maze and the other group did the other activities such as the books in a box challenge. There are coloured squares painted onto the concrete and a foam square that has five green sides and one red side, the instructions say that the foam square is full of books. The red side is the opening of the foam square. You start at one side of the painted squares and try to get to the other side with the foam square, remembering not to flip the red side DOWNWARDS or the books will fall out. In the maze you had to find things like the fountain of youth, the seven dwarfs, snow white and dead ends.

Biographies
This Wednesday 26th October our students in years 3-7 will be interviewing members of the Boyne Valley, to write biographies of these community members. The students are looking forward to this as it will give the students and the community members an opportunity to take a journey back through time.

But however, Beverley didn’t attend high school and yet she has had many occupations in this long life of hers.
Two of her fondest and special memories are having Christmas with her family. Also family gatherings and family picnics. She also loved playing cricket in the yard and enjoying herself swimming in the creek. Beverley enjoyed her sport and hobby’s a lot which were tennis, gardening and cooking.

Neville James Ryan
By Madisson Marriage
Neville James Ryan (or known by most asJack) has had an exciting life so far. He was born on the 12th of September 1941, in the beautiful countryside of Wondai to the proud parents of Paddy and Ethel Ryan. He was raised on a dairy farm with his three brothers and sister.
Jack went to school at Elginvale Primary school, where he received his education. Jack rode to school by horse, which is one of his fondest memories. After school Jack would ride five miles just to play his favourite hobbies, cricket and tennis.
One day at school during singing lessons, Jacks teacher thought he was talking. So the teacher made Jack stand out in front of the school and sing. But Jack hesitated to sing, so he stood there for twenty minutes. The teacher said that for how long you stand there that’s how long the class would be kept in after school. Jack said two words and the teacher gave up and sent Jack back to his place.
After leaving school Jack worked in the saw mill for three months. On the 10th of August 1968 in Toowoomba, Jack was married to Veronica May Fitzpatrick. They had three children, Darren, Shaun and Tony. Jack then became a stockman. He has been doing this for fifty two years. He won the Risdon Cup Camp Draft at Warwick. He also won awards for training his dog Boss. After that he was invited to show Boss at some other country shows.
Jack Ryan, has had exciting, joyful and fulfilling life as he has travelled visiting places such as Cairns in a caravan, travelling to Lake Eyre and Sydney, winning the Risdon Cup and having a family.
Jack has had a broken arm and a cracked knee, but nothing will stop Jack from living his life to the fullest and right now he is working cattle and horses doing that exact thing, living his life to the fullest.
